You have years of real work behind you. Maybe your group is being reorganized. Maybe the job you took is turning into a different job. Maybe you are only starting to wonder how long it lasts.

You are paying attention, and you want to use this time well. The people who do best in a layoff or a bad reorg are the ones who already know what they want and how to say it.

Most people wait until the pressure is on. Then they update a resume and send it everywhere. You may have paid for a new resume already and heard nothing back. That is a different problem than a weak career. A resume that describes you accurately is not the same as one that makes someone want to hire you.

What closes the gap is knowing who you are and what you want, finding the proof of it in your own work, and showing it the same way everywhere.

🔍 Why Good Candidates Get Overlooked

Most resume help changes the format. Here is what we usually find underneath:

  • You list your tasks instead of the results you created.
  • Your resume, LinkedIn, and cover letter tell three different stories.
  • You aim at a job title when you should aim at a type of work.
  • You play down how much you have actually led, built, or fixed.
  • A recruiter can’t tell in ten seconds what you want to do next.

Every one of these is fixable. First you have to see which ones are yours.

⚙️ What We Actually Do

This is four 1:1 sessions with me. You get homework between sessions, so you keep moving, and you finish with a real plan.

1

Get clear on what you want to be known for

We start with your purpose and the work that gives you energy, so your brand points at the right job.

2

Set your mindset and your message

We work on how you talk about yourself, and on the beliefs that make you downplay what you have done.

3

Rebuild your resume and cover letter

We go through both with you, line by line, so they show your results and make a hiring manager want to talk to you.

4

Match your LinkedIn and social presence

We check that your profile, headline, and posts tell the same story as your resume, so every conversation starts from the same strong first impression.

💬 What Clients Say

Omario is an attorney and a professor. Here is what changed for him after working with me.

Here’s how he described it:

Omario K.
“He helped me see everything I have already been doing but for some odd reason, I never saw all of it. And as a result, I felt like I didn’t have much to say in a networking conversation or in a cover letter. But I have been now a lot more prolific in self promotion in an assertive, but humble way. I’ve had a lot more things to say in cover letters.”
— Omario K.

That is the first session. You can’t describe work you haven’t looked at clearly. Once you can see it, the words come.

Princess K.
“The first thing I got is more clear about what I have to do. You helped me to see the other bigger world I wasn’t targeting.”
— Princess K., Brand Strategist
Jonathan C.
“Any time we talk, I walk away with different insights of, ‘All right, let’s frame the resume this way,’ or, ‘Let’s diversify the job hunting areas. Let’s look at this.’ And it’s just something that I can always walk away with.”
— Jonathan C., Marketing Manager

Dylan Cornelius — career coach

About Dylan Cornelius

I’ve been on both sides of the hiring table. I started my career running a technical staffing office in Silicon Valley, then spent twelve years managing teams and sitting on hiring panels at Dun & Bradstreet and Charles Schwab, and I’ve been the candidate in more job searches than I’d like to count. Today I’m a program manager in Fortune 50 financial services. I hold an MBA from Santa Clara University and a psychology degree from UC Berkeley. I’m a certified Strategic Intervention coach, PMP, and CSM. I know what decision-makers actually respond to — and what costs candidates offers they deserved to get.

Your next application matters. Let’s make sure it sounds like you.
