I’ve been through four acquisitions and 10 layoffs.
If you’ve been thinking about changing jobs, it’s possible there’s a layoff in your future and they’ll force your hand anyway.

I’ve been laid off once while on vacation, another time on a Saturday (my day off), and once my boss came in to the office while on maternity leave to lay me off.
Always because “we’ve had to make some difficult decisions, and you’ve been impacted.” In my life, I’ve been paid 18 months of wages in severance.
They always do it on their schedule, often after months of deliberation. In big, sophisticated companies, they meet twice a year(sometimes more often) to decide the new org chart. Anyone left without a box on the org chart will get the last-minute meeting at some time in the future, after the attorneys, HR, and management have been notified.
If you think there’s a severance, wait it out. If not, get active and more creative while you have flexibility and options, if you can.
What’s you best layoff story, or what’s got you thinking it’s time to leave?
