What I Believe
I'm Dylan Cornelius.
I believe the world can work for everyone.
People want to push the limits of their contribution and participation. Said another way, people want to be more, do more, and have more -- and they will do so if given the opportunity.
Who do you know is looking for that opportunity?
What's Wrong
We believe things that aren't true:
- people and companies tell us things that aren't true.
- some of them don't even know they're lying to us.
- we're not trained to distinguish lies from the truth, and we're not good at it even when we are trained.
It's just wrong that any of those is the case.
Why It's Wrong
Our beliefs keep us stuck and frustrated.
The world around us, too often, reinforces our beliefs.
Also too often, we seek other people, organizations, institutions, and feedback that reinforces our beliefs, rather than challenges them.
So, we stay stuck.
Sometimes we don't even know we're stuck.
But we sure know when we're frustrated, which, for some of us, is A LOT.
...or, we're angry...
...or numb.
Maybe we feel empty inside.
...or depressed...
...or anxious...
However we feel, we sometimes feel like everything's fine, or everything's going to be ok.
Then, later, those other feelings return: something's not quite right, or SOMETHING'S REALLY WRONG.
In those moments, some of us drink, or we use illegal or prescription drugs, or we isolate, or we complain, or we cut, because we just can't take any more of it, or we just wish it would all go away...
...but it doesn't.
Someone oughta fix that.

As a former recruiter, hiring manager, and employee who's been laid off 10 times, I can confirm that unless you run the company, you're definitely not an insider—no matter how nice or seemingly supportive your boss is.
Even if they mean well, the day their boss says "fire them," you'll be gone. Because your boss needs their job too, just like you.
When it comes down to it, we're all employees. And we'll all mostly do whatever is necessary to keep our job—unless it's downright horrible—at least until we can find another one.
Even Steve Jobs was fired from Apple—and he didn't see it coming that day either.
Nobody is safe.
But it's easier on your nerves, lifestyle, and confidence when you can sell your company stock for $70 million, like Steve did.
Why This Is Personal for Me
"I've done hard things. I know what it takes."
Every time I'm laid off, it stomps one more time on the nerve that was insulted when I was four and my mom introduced me to "Steve. He'll be 'Dad' now."
He adopted me. And the first words out of his mouth, without hesitation, were: "Don't get used to it—at 18 you're out."
I've been temporary since I was four. Never an insider. Always expendable.
